Short n’ sweet:

My career started in the Manhattan publishing world (S&S, PRH) as a professional cover designer in 2011.
I became a full-time freelancer in 2015 and have been running my own studio ever since.
In 2021, I created the website INeedABookInterior.com.
In 2023, I launched the website INeedABookCover.com.
Today, I am based in my hometown of Washington, DC.

Clientele:
Most of my clients are large, commercial publishers and small, independent presses. I do partner with self-publishing authors but only in select circumstances where the project is a strong fit.

Availability:
When it comes to book interiors, I can always fit in a new title, whether it’s coming from a press or an author. The same is not always true for new book cover work, where I tend to be more selective about the projects I take on. To understand why, please watch this video.

Art Director / Cover Consultant

In addition to offering full-service book cover design, I also provide Art Direction services for both publishers and self-publishing authors alike.

I’ve been brought on by publishers on an as-needed basis to manage and Art Direct specific titles.

I also work closely with self-publishing authors who need help turning loose ideas into a solid Creative Brief.

Authors: Approaching a designer with half-formed concepts can be a major turn-off. Instead, your intro email should set the foundation for a smooth, successful collaboration. As your Cover Consultant, I help my authors (1) develop three clear and compelling creative directions, (2) craft a meaningful Creative Brief, and (3) hand-pick the designer best suited for the job (often making the introduction myself). Hired by the author to help refine & communicate her vision in the Creative Brief. Introduced author to the perfect designer/illustrator. Weighed in on concepts later on in the process to stay on track with the initial vision. Cover design and illo by Vi-An Nguyen.

Hired by author Nathan Baugh to write his Creative Brief and to advise him on finding and working with the best possible designer. He eventually hired Jeff Miller for a fantastic series design. Final jacket to be unveiled soon!

Hired by author David Lortscher to find the right illustrator to execute his vision. Plus, provided full interior services. Paired him with artist Valero Doval for illustration and cover design.

Hired by IdeaPress Publishing to provide Art Direction services, including communicating directly with both the author and designer, choosing the designer. Final design by Keith Hayes.
